Choosing the Right Digital Video Recorder for Your Fleet
When selecting a digital video recorder (DVR), it’s essential to determine the number of cameras needed in your vehicle and whether you require high-definition footage.
Our SURE MDVR range provides high-quality video (720p minimum) and supports up to 8 cameras, making them ideal CCTV systems for single-decker buses and small coaches.
For vehicles requiring more extensive coverage, such as double-decker buses, the Timespace range is the perfect fit. The Timespace V400 can support up to 16 cameras, ensuring comprehensive video capture, whilst a more premium option is offered by the V700, supporting up to 20 cameras. Additionally, these DVRs integrate with Timespace’s LANLink software, enabling vehicle tracking, video capture and secure storage of important vehicle data.
High-Definition IP Cameras for Buses and Coaches
IP cameras are a vital component of any bus or coach setup, designed to capture high-definition footage in critical areas where clarity is essential. These cameras can be directly connected to the DVR via the LAN port or linked through a router LAN connection for seamless integration with your digital video recorder.
Many of our IP camera models feature IP67-rated weatherproofing, ensuring durability in harsh conditions. They also include wide dynamic range (WDR) technology, which delivers clear, balanced images even in challenging lighting conditions—where parts of the image are too bright while others are too dark. WDR software adjusts the exposure, providing a single, clear image for better surveillance and safety.
Passenger monitors in double-decker buses are typically placed at the base of the stairs, displaying a continuous feed of images captured by the onboard CCTV cameras. These monitors serve to reassure passengers by highlighting the presence of CCTV, promoting a sense of safety while also acting as a deterrent to criminal activity.
Our most popular option for passenger monitors is the 15″ Vigilant Vision, featuring a durable metal casing and XGA (1024 x 768) resolution for clear, reliable display quality.
Routers for 4G Data and Wi-Fi Connectivity
Routers are essential for providing digital video recorders (DVRs) with 4G data and Wi-Fi via a SIM card, enabling live video streaming and real-time vehicle tracking through Timespace or SURE applications. In addition to connectivity, the router powers IP cameras and other PoE (Power over Ethernet) devices, offering four extra LAN ports for easy integration.
Typically installed alongside the DVR in a secure lock box beneath passenger seating, the router is conveniently positioned for engineers to access, service, or replace equipment as needed.
When considering bus CCTV, it’s crucial to determine what you need to capture and how many cameras are required for full coverage. The below diagram shows the typical camera layout for a Transport for London double-decker bus, designed by SURE Solutions.
This setup includes 17 strategically placed cameras throughout the vehicle to minimise blind spots. Typically, 5 cameras are positioned on the exterior: 1 forward-facing, 2 rear cameras, and 1 on each side to monitor passing vehicles and pedestrians.
The schematic also highlights the placement of key components: the review socket is located above the driver on the cab header, the digital video recorder and router are positioned above the stairwell, the driver’s monitor is mounted overhead in the driver’s cab, and the passenger monitor is located at the bottom of the stairs.

Is Bus CCTV Necessary?
Many fleet operators may wonder if installing CCTV in their vehicles is a legal requirement. Technically, in the United Kingdom, it is not mandated by law. However, we strongly recommend equipping your fleet with CCTV, as it can be crucial in the event of a legal dispute.
When implementing CCTV, it’s important to remain GDPR compliant, ensuring that camera footage is stored securely to protect individuals’ privacy and prevent unauthorised distribution.
What Should I Consider Regarding Camera Placement?
The first consideration is where to position your cameras. Determine what you want to capture and how you’d like the wiring to be routed, especially if the DVR is hardwired to the cameras.
Wired vs. Wireless Cameras: Which Should I Choose?
We recommend using wired cameras due to the various challenges associated with wireless systems, such as signal loss, weather-related interference and reduced image quality. For longer vehicles like coaches, wireless cameras may struggle to transmit data effectively, particularly if the DVR is located at the rear.
Moreover, image quality is often compromised with wireless cameras, as they typically provide lower resolution output. Weather conditions can further degrade visual clarity, which is particularly relevant in the UK’s variable climate.
